Welcome

About the School

Welcome to the Leeds School of Contemporary Art and Graphic Design. The School is located in the Faculty of Arts and Society and has its origins in the prestigious Leeds College of Art one of the constituent colleges of Leeds Polytechnic which became Leeds Met. Thus it shares all the benefits of its own lively creative culture with those of this large modern University.

There are about 750 students working for undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees. Flexible individual approaches to learning are supported by staff with rich experiences and expertise as professional practitioners and researchers as well as an extensive range of visiting lecturers. Work is undertaken in well-equipped studios, workshops, I.T and multi-media facilities. This practical work is informed by critical and historical studies which provide an understanding of its wider social, cultural and professional contexts.

All the courses have an important international and cross-cultural dimension through exchange programmes, overseas study opportunities and travel awards and well as local and regional engagement through live briefs and projects.

Overall the School is committed to the personal, academic and professional development of individual students from a diversity of backgrounds in an inclusive climate of lively contemporary activity in visual making, doing and thinking.

In September 2009 the School will be moving to newly built accommodation which will be the spur for the next exciting phase of its long history of innovation and creativity.
